About This Spot

Stepping into Yama Sushi, you’re welcomed by a quietly vibrant atmosphere that gently hums with the anticipation of sharing a meal crafted with care. Nestled in Redding’s charming Hartnell Avenue neighborhood, the restaurant blends the familiar warmth of a local favorite with subtle touches of something a bit more adventurous—inviting you to slow down, savor, and connect.

The essence of the place reveals itself in the small rituals that unfold around the table: the soft clink of chopsticks, the gentle whoosh of floating sushi boats drifting by, and the satisfying sizzle that rises from the tabletop grill, where conversations often deepen between friends and family. Unlike the rushed pace of typical dining spots, here the rhythm is unhurried, allowing each bite and every shared moment to carry their own quiet significance.

The menu plays like a curated adventure, where familiar flavors meet unexpected twists. It’s not just sushi—it’s a spectrum of tastes and textures that includes rich and tender grilled dishes, comforting bowls of seafood soup, and playful rolls where cream cheese or honey sauces make an appearance to delight the palate. Whether you’re drawn to fresh nigiri, the layered complexity of rolls, or the gratifying crunch of tempura, each plate arrives with an invitation to explore both tradition and innovation.

Yama Sushi’s unique all-you-can-eat sushi boat experience feels like a gentle dance around the chef’s craft. The little boats drifting past with carefully prepared bites create a dynamic way to taste a variety of offerings, turning mealtime into a shared adventure where you’re part of the flow. This communal style of dining quietly encourages connection, not just to the food, but to everyone gathered around the table.

You’ll notice the thoughtful touches too—the built-in vents at each grill station keep the air fresh amid the inviting aromas, and the attentive, unhurried service helps maintain a relaxed pace throughout your visit. Here, the focus isn’t on extravagance, but on creating a sincere, approachable space where quality ingredients and genuine hospitality meet.

For those who seek a sushi experience that feels both comforting and fresh, grounded in community and subtle delight, Yama Sushi offers a quietly memorable stop in the heart of Redding.

Great self grill table and all you can eat place to enjoy with friends or loved ones. Pricey and there are rules, but I dont think you can experience something like that anywhere else in town. I'm sure most would compare it to just simply having a bbq outside, its just a little different culture wise, gotta just try it. Tables have built in vent for all the food smoke, so the air inside was very clean. Staff was also nice! Downside, sushi needs help. Thats just the truth.

Pork belly should be a thick cut. Sides were pickled perfectly.

We went on Veteran's Day during lunch for the Sushi Boats All-you-can-eat. Service was prompt and attentive. Food was good but not a lot of variety. Sometimes you had to wait a while to get something different. I think it was worth going as my wife and I are definitely full. It was a very interesting concept with everyone around the Itamae, sushi chef, with all the boats floating by with different plates of sushi.

Edit 06/12/25: They are now doing all you can eat fresh sushi for $21.95. Lots of choices on adorable little floating boats. Good sushi here. My husband was happy with his seafood soup. I miss when they used to have small portions of sushi on the little sushi boats. It's pricey but sushi usually is. I was a bit disappointed in the small glass (small pour in a regular size glass) of Chardonnay but I suppose that isnt the end of the world. Overall this is a good place to eat and it's where I go when I am craving sushi. They have an all you can eat Korean BBQ next door that is connected. It is good also. UPDATE. They recently started the sushi boats again M-F. The sushi boats are little portions and u pay according to the color of the plate. The little boats go around the sushi bar. It's super cute.
